Frequently Asked Questions
What is Toastmasters?
It's an international non-profit organization dedicated to helping people with their speaking, leadership, and communication skills. Toastmasters can help you lose your fear of public speaking and improve skills you need to advance in your career. You can get started by attending a local Toastmasters meeting.
Who are your club members?
Members range in age from 20s to 60s and are from many different professions and cultures.
If I am not in the "business world", will I feel part of the group?
Toastmasters come from all walks of life. Every club is a little different in "character".
How many people attend your meetings?
On average, we have 20-25 people attend our meetings each week.
What happens when I first walk in to the meeting?
You will be greeted by a member, asked to sign a visitor roster, and given a name tag. Any questions you have about the meeting will be answered. You'll have a chance to meet and talk with several of the members.
The primary goal is to put you at ease, because we've all been in your shoes, walking into a new club and perhaps seeing a Toastmasters meeting for the first time. By the end of the meeting, most visitors tell us how much fun they had.
Will I be expected to speak in front of the group very soon after joining?
You will be encouraged to speak soon to begin your progress, however everyone may proceed at their own pace.
Members take on easier meeting roles at first, then gradually become more involved as their comfort level increases.
Must I have previous experience in public speaking to join?
Anyone over 18 interested in improving their communications or leadership skills is eligible.
How often can I attend a meeting as a guest?
As often as you like; however, becoming a member is the best way to get the most out of the club. Once a member you can give prepared speeches, take on one of the many meeting or leadership roles.
